Samsung Could Release Oreo For Galaxy S6 And Galaxy Note 5

Most Android smartphones aren’t supported for major platform upgrades for more than two years. The Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, and Galaxy S6 Edge+ came with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box and have since received their two major platform upgrades, first to Marshmallow and then to Nougat last year. Many had lost hope that these handsets would be updated to Android 8.0 Oreo but it turns out that there may be hope yet.

It’s not impossible for Android handsets to receive more than two major platform upgrades. Google’s Pixel 2 is the first smartphone that is guaranteed to receive such upgrades for at least three years after launch.

T-Mobile usually reveals development progress of a new major update on its website and the official support pages for the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, and the Galaxy Note 5 on the carrier’s website all mention that Android 8.0 Oreo is in development for the aforementioned handsets.

While there’s no confirmation as yet from either T-Mobile or Samsung on this matter, every single support page says “T-Mobile and the device manufacturer have agreed to support a new software update.”

Those who own these handsets will certainly be very anxious to find out if they will be updated to Oreo. Hopefully, they will provide clarity on the matter in the near future.
