The report claims that Samsung had apparently ramped up production of OLED to meet the potential demand of the iPhone X. However it seems that the iPhone X might not be selling as well as Samsung or Apple had hoped, leading to Apple halving their production. It also seems that Samsung was hoping that Apple starting to produce OLED iPhones would prompt other handset makers to make the switch to OLED, which also explains why they might have produced more.
As a result, Nikkei is claiming that Samsung is now trying to seek outside clients to purchase their OLED panels that they might have overproduced in anticipation of the iPhone X. However this is proving to be harder than Samsung had hoped due to Chinese OLED panel makers increasing their production capacity, making the scene more competitive than ever and driving prices down.
Nikkei’s report seems to be in line with what a Samsung executive had said earlier in the month about the company trying to diversify their clients. The executive had also stated back then that they weren’t too worried about the production cuts by a “certain customer”.
