Google Officially Announces ARCore 1.0

According to an earlier report, Google was rumored to officially announce the launch of ARCore at MWC 2018, but it seems that Google decided to launch it earlier than expected as they have since officially announced ARCore 1.0. ARCore was officially announced last year and released as a preview, but now it looks like it will be available to all developers who want to take advantage of it.

According to Google, “Developers can now publish AR apps to the Play Store, and it’s a great time to start building. ARCore works on 100 million Android smartphones, and advanced AR capabilities are available on all of these devices.” They also add that the framework will play nicely with 13 devices for now, which includes Google’s Pixel lineup of smartphones; the Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, S8, S8+, and Note 8; the LG V30, V30+; the ASUS Zenfone AR; and the OnePlus 5.

Google also adds that they will be partnering with Samsung, Huawei, LGE, Motorola, ASUS, Xiaomi, HMD/Nokia, ZTE, Sony Mobile, and Vivo for upcoming devices, which seems to be in line with what we’ve heard in which the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are expected to support ARCore as well.

That being said, exactly what developers plan to do with ARCore remains to be seen as the onus is on them to take advantage of the it. However so far companies like Porsche are already using it.
