Snapchat recently rolled out a major redesign of the app that many of its most loyal users dislike. Naturally, people are wondering if it’s possible to get the old Snapchat back, and while it’s indeed possible right now, it’s a hassle. It’s unlikely that Snapchat will pull the redesign after criticism from users so it’s up to the users to decide if they want to go through this trouble to get the old Snapchat back.
The workaround was originally discovered by Twitter user Clare James and while the good news is that it works, the bad news is that it only works on iPhones. Android users are out of luck.
James posted the step-by-step instructions on how to get the old Snapchat back on Twitter. They involve deleting the app, turning off automatic updates for it and then downloading it once again. Once the app asks you to sign in, tap on forgot password and go through the steps to get a new password. Once you log in with the new password, you’ll have the old Snapchat back.
While it works, it’s far from a permanent solution. If you force quit the app, it will automatically load the redesigned version when it’s launched the next time. Moreover, Snapchat is working to plug this workaround which means that those who don’t get the old Snapchat back now may soon not be able to do so at all.
You should also be mindful of the fact that deleting the app also deletes all of the Memories so be sure to go into the Settings menu first and select Backup Progress to ensure that the Memories aren’t deleted.
One major problem with this workaround is that since you have to disable automatic updates, you can’t update the app to get new features whenever they’re added. So you then have to decide whether you want to stick with the old version or get new features when they’re released.
