RED is a company that makes professional-grade digital cinematography and photography cameras. As you can probably imagine, its products are very expensive since they’re primarily aimed at professionals. However, a new partnership will bring its cameras within reach for a lot more people as Foxconn is now planning to build cheaper RED 8K cameras in the near future.
Foxconn, one of the largest contract-manufacturing firms in the world, has said that it’s going to make professional-grade cameras with RED and that they’re going to be affordable for the general public.
“We will make cameras that will shoot professional-quality films in 8K resolution but at only a third of current prices and a third of current camera sizes,” said Foxconn CEO Terry Gou.
RED currently sells a couple of 8K cameras which include one that costs almost $30,000. That’s not that you’d expect an average camera enthusiast to spend but if Foxconn is able to provide a similar camera at the $10,000 price point, there are bound to be many enthusiasts who can justify the $10,000 purchase.
Foxconn is now in talks with RED to form a joint venture or partnership to produce these affordable cameras. Just how long will that take remains to be seen so it may be a while before cheaper RED 8K cameras hit the market.
