When Fitbit launched the Fitbit Ionic, it represented the company’s first attempt at creating a smartwatch. Prior to that, Fitbit was known for their fitness trackers, but following the launch of various smartwatches, Fitbit decided to toss their hat into the ring. Now it seems that the company could have more smartwatches in the works.
This was revealed during the company’s latest earnings (via Engadget) in which they announced their plans to create a family of smartwatches that have “more mass appeal”. According to Fitbit’s CEO James Part, “In 2018 we’ll focus on managing down expenses, continuing to expand in the smartwatch category and supporting our engaged global community on their health and fitness journeys.”
However it seems that despite Fitbit’s plan to launch smartwatches, until they do it appears that the company is expecting to see a decline in revenue. The company believes that as more customers turn to smartwatches, there will be a reduced need for trackers which is what Fitbit is primarily known for, which in turn could impact revenue.
Fitbit does not dive into the details of what kind of smartwatches we can expect from them later this year, but given Fitbit’s recent activities, it is clear that it will very health focused.
