You may not be able to name a gasoline-powered car capable of reaching 0-60 miles-per-hour in under 2 seconds off the top of your head, let alone cars that are fully electric, but the Aspark Owl is going to be one name that’s now going to stick with you if you like knowing about cars. It’s an all-electric supercar that hit 0-60 miles-per-hour under 2 seconds.
Aspark Owl is a Japanese supercar that was unveiled as a concept during the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show. One of the prototypes managed to hit 62 miles-per-hour from 0 during testing in just 1.92 seconds.
This goes to show that claims about electric supercars bringing down this time to below 2 seconds really have substance to them. Even Tesla is promising similar performance for its next-generation Roadster sports car that’s due to be launched in 2020.
It merits mentioning here that the prototype used for this timed run isn’t production ready or even street legal. It’s running on slicks instead of street legal tires but apparently, that doesn’t make a lot of difference because Aspark says that the street legal version of the Owl will also be able to achieve similar times.
The Owl is powered by an electric motor at each wheel which delivers a combined 430 horsepower and 563 pound-feet of torque. The numbers are lower than a gasoline-powered supercar but the Owl is lighter at just 1,874 pounds.
It’s unclear when the Aspark Owl is going to go on sale but the company has previously said that it’s only going to build 50 units which will be sold for $4.4 million each.
