According to the filing, it seems that Apple together with LG and Valve will be teaming up and investing $10 million into a firm called eMagin. As it stands eMagin makes microdisplays used in healthcare and the military, but the filing also revealed that its microdisplays could also be developed and designed for use in AR or VR headsets.
eMagin does not name the companies involved, but like we said the filing with the SEC has revealed who is behind it. According to the company, “We entered into strategic agreements with multiple Tier One consumer product companies for the design and development of microdisplays for consumer head mounted devices and, together with these companies, negotiated with mass production manufacturers for higher volume production capabilities.”
That being said, it should be noted that all the companies involved have some kind of interest in VR/AR technology. Apple is mostly on the software side with ARKit, although like we said there have been rumors of an AR headset. LG has dabbled in VR with their own VR headset, and Valve did help HTC with the development of the HTC Vive.
