Prior to this, Android 6.0 Marshmallow continued to reign supreme where back in 2017, the two-year old operating system was installed on 32% of all Android handsets. However it looks like some of those users might have upgraded because Marshmallow is now sitting at 28.1%, thus allowing Nougat to overtake it.
As for the latest version of Android, which is Android 8.0 Oreo that was released last year, it seems that it barely broke the 1% mark at 1.1%. That being said, this is more or less the norm when it comes to Android, where the latest version usually has low distribution figures as OEMs tend to be a bit slow when releasing updates for their devices.
We expect that those figures should rise later on in the year as more handsets based on Android Oreo are released. In the meantime it looks like Android Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich are still clinging on at 0.3% and 0.4% respectively.
