Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg likes to give himself a personal challenge every year. He has been doing this since 2009. Personal challenges in the past have included things like “read more books” and “meet new people.” 2018’s challenge is a bit more different and it’s going to have a much bigger impact.
Zuckerberg has said that the world’s largest social network has “a lot of work to do” and that fixing Facebook is his personal challenge for 2018. Facebook has been in the news a lot this past year due to the fake news saga as well as harassment and abuse issues.
he writes in a lengthy post that his personal challenge for 2018 is to fix issues like interference by nation states on the social network, abuse and hate on the community, and ensuring that time spent on Facebook is time well spent for the billion-plus users.
“We currently make too many errors enforcing our policies and preventing misuse of our tools,” he acknowledges, adding that if they’re successful this year then Facebook is going to end 2018 on a much better trajectory.
Zuckerberg is going to bring together groups of experts to discuss and help work through these challenges. “This will be a serious year of self-improvement and I’m looking forward to learning from working to fix our issues together,” he adds.
