Uber’s food delivery service Uber Eats has taken a life of its own. It’s immensely popular in many markets across the globe among users who want to have their meals delivered. Uber Eats has only been delivering meals prepared by restaurants so far, it hasn’t been making the food itself, but with a new acquisition, it may get into the business of making food.
Uber Eats has acquired Ando, it’s a delivery-only restaurant what was founded by Momofuku chef David Chang. Ando is an entirely on-demand delivery restaurant. There’s no dine-in space or even a front of the house. Customers order food via the Ando app and the restaurant delivers it directly to them.
Ando’s service was only available in New York and it has now posted a notice on its website informing patrons that the service is being shut down effective immediately as it’s integrating with Uber Eats.
Uber Eats has been one of the delivery partners for Ando ever since the service was launched in May 2016. Ando hasn’t clarified what it’s new role will be under Uber Eats but this acquisition goes to show that as rivals Deliveroo and Amazon get more involved in making food themselves, Uber Eats is not going to be left behind.
After all, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has proudly proclaimed at DLD Munich today that “We’ll be the largest food delivery company in the world this year.”
