[CES 2018] Every year at CES, companies like Samsung love to show off their advancements in display technology and this was something we expected would happen again this year. Sure enough Samsung did not disappoint as the company has since taken the wraps off a TV unit called “The Wall” that is a 146-inch modular MicroLED display.
According to Samsung, “Featuring a module-based, bezel-less design, “The Wall” also exemplifies how consumers can customize their television sizes and shapes to suit their needs. The screen can adapt to serve different purposes, such as creating a wall-size display for multiple spaces.”
For those unfamiliar, MicroLED display technology is based on LED technology, and one of the main differences compared to OLED is that it drops the use of organic materials, and instead using an inorganic material, which in turn reduces the need for a polarizing and encapsulation layer.
Ultimately this results in panels that are thinner, making it ideal for devices like wearables. 2018’s Apple Watch is rumored to adopt such displays. There are also rumors that Apple is looking to mass produce such displays for use beyond the Apple Watch. That being said, Samsung has not mentioned anything regarding pricing or availability, but they did state that more information will be revealed later this spring.
