Samsung primarily uses its in-house developed Exynos processors for its smartphones. For flagship smartphones like the Galaxy S8, it has to rely on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips for certain markets like the United States. According to a new report, the company is now more open to selling its Exynos processors to other smartphone manufacturers as it wants to increase the reach of its smartphone chip platform.
Samsung chipsets aren’t widely used by other smartphone manufacturers but some have adopted it for their handsets, this includes China-based Meizu that has released several devices powered by Samsung’s Exynos processors.
According to a new report out of Taiwan, Samsung wants to boost its own wafer foundry utilization rate with this move and subsequently increase its share of the smartphone chip market, particularly for mid-range handsets.
MediaTek’s chips are widely used by smartphone manufacturers for their mid-range handsets and it’s expected that Samsung’s decision to move into this market aggressively is going to have a negative impact on MediaTek’s fortunes.
Samsung hasn’t confirmed any of this right now and it’s unlikely that it will, given that companies don’t normally comment on stories coming out of the supply chain. However, we’ll know if this report was true if we start seeing many new mid-range handsets on the market in the future powered by Samsung’s Exynos chips.
