We reported yesterday that some OnePlus customers had experienced credit card fraud after using their cards for purchases on the company’s online store. The customers said that they received notifications of fraudulent card activity after purchasing phones from the OnePlus website. The company didn’t confirm immediately if its payment system has been compromised but it has said that it’s investigating these reports.
Most of the customers who complained about fraudulent card activity used their cards on the OnePlus site within the past two months. Some customers have also taken to Reddit to detail their experience. OnePlus has not provided any details as yet but it says in a statement that the company takes information privacy “extremely seriously.”
OnePlus said that “Over the weekend, members of the OnePlus community reported cases of unknown credit card transactions occurring on their credit cards post purchase from oneplus.net,” adding that it has started investigating the issue “as a matter of urgency.” It promises to keep customers updated.
The company has posted an FAQ document which reveals that only customers who made credit card payments on the site are affected, not those who used PayPal. It also explains that no card information is stored on the site itself, the information is sent directly to the payment processor over an encrypted connection.
It advises customers to get in touch with their credit card companies and get the fraudulent payments reversed. OnePlus will continue to investigate the matter with its third-party service providers and reveal the findings to its customers in due course.
