OnePlus 5 Face Unlock Feature Arrives In Latest Beta

OnePlus introduced its Face Unlock feature with the OnePlus 5T and many expected that the company would bring this feature to the predecessor as well. OnePlus was likely going to bundle the feature with the Oreo update for the OnePlus 5. The company’s co-founder Carl Pei confirmed last month that based on feedback from users, OnePlus had decided to bring the feature over to this handset. The OnePlus 5 Face Unlock feature has gone live with the latest beta for this handset.

The reason why OnePlus is able to bring this feature to the predecessor with just a simple software update is because it doesn’t need complex sensors or facial recognition technology like the iPhone X. The Face Unlock feature only uses the front-facing camera for facial recognition. There were no hardware limitations preventing the feature from finding its way on the OnePlus 5.

OnePlus started rolling out the Android 8.0 Oreo-based Oxygen OS 5.0 for the OnePlus 5 about two weeks ago. This feature wasn’t included in the initial release. The company has now released a beta of Oxygen OS 5.0 which brings the Face Unlock feature for the OnePlus 5.

The beta firmware can now be downloaded from the company’s website. Weighing in at 1.58GB, it brings the Face Unlock feature, the December security patch, and fixes some minor issues as well.
