Oculus Partners With Xiaomi To Make The Oculus Go Headset

[CES 2018] Last year Oculus announced their plans for a standalone VR headset called the Oculus Go. One of the highlights of the headset is that it did not require a PC or a smartphone, and could be powered by itself. Now at CES 2018, Oculus has announced that they have partnered up with Xiaomi who will be helping them make the first Oculus Go headset.

The announcement was made by former Googler Hugo Barra, who interestingly enough used to work at Xiaomi before he left to help head up Facebook’s VR efforts. In terms of specs, the Oculus Go will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset and a 2,560×1,440 pixel resolution screen with support for spatial audio.

In addition to announcing the Oculus Go, the company also announced the Mi VR Standalone headset which will be launched in China. According to Xiaomi, the specs of the Mi VR Standalone will be same as the Oculus Go. The main difference would be its content, where it would be geared towards users in China, and also to help Chinese developers create apps and content for the device.

As for pricing, the Oculus Go is priced at $199 and will be released this year, but no specific dates have been mentioned yet, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for its availability.
