[CES 2018] Qualcomm has just entered the Windows PC product category a month ago, when partners HP and Asus launched their own versions of the “Always-On” Snapdragon PC laptop at an exclusive event in Hawaii. Today, Lenovo is jumping on the bandwagon at CES 2018 with the Miix 630, a 2-in-1 detachable PC laptop with Windows 10 S powered by the Snapdragon 835, Qualcomm’s flagship SoC of last year.
While HP opted for a super thin (6.9mm!) and fancy looking 2-in-1 with the HP Envy 2x , Asus took the productivity route with its NovaGo laptop that features a larger (13.3”, thicker and heavier well-designed chassis (3.06 Lbs and 14.9mm) and more ports (two full size USB 3.0, one full size HDMI, one micro SD card & nano SIM combo slot, one audio jack, one DC in – vs. HP Envy 2x has only one USB Type-C port, one combo audio jack, one micro SD card reader and one SIM card slot) .
From the specs sheet and product photos, it looks like Lenovo went the same path as the HP Envy 2x with its Miix 630. The new 2-in-1 12.3” Snapdragon PC features comparable dimensions and specs as its HP counterpart, packaged in a similar detachable design.
It is difficult to know how the Miix 630 really compares in terms of thickness as we only know that the height with the keyboard is 15.6mm (0.6”) while HP provided the measurement without the keyboard: 6.9 mm.
We suspect that the Miix might be a hair thicker, and we will confirm from the show floor with the device in hand!
The rest of the dimensions are the same with 293mm (11.5”) for the width and 210mm(8.5”) for the depth. The Miix 630 deliver a standard weight as it tips the scale at 1.33kg (2.93 lbs)
The 12.3” touch display covered with Corning Glass features the same WUXGA+ (1920 x 1280) resolution as the Envy 2x and both laptops deliver the same estimated battery life of 20 hours (video playback) from a similar battery capacity: 48Wh for the Miix 630 and 49Wh for the HP device. The package includes a Lenovo digital pen that allows users to easily draw or take notes directly on the screen in tablet mode.
On the hardware side, the Snapdragon 835 SoC features the integrated Adreno 540 GPU, and the Miix will comes in two RAM options, 4GB or 8GB. For storage, customers can choose from 64Gb, 128GB or 256GB.
As for connectivity, you will get the same ports in the Miix630: one USB Type-C, one SD Card Reader, one Nano SIM Card Slot (4G LTE connectivity), and Audio Combo Jack.
For those who are interested in an Always Connected Windows PC with ultra long battery life, make sure the Windows 10 S is not limiting for your particular usage. For instance, this streamlined, more secure and optimized version of Windows only supports the applications available in the Microsoft Store.
The Miix 630 starts at $799.99, expected to be available in Iron Grey beginning in Q2 of 2018 on www.lenovo.com and will be compatible with select local carriers. More info at www.lenovo.com/lenovolaunch and www.lenovo.com/ces.
