A purported stable build of Android 8.0 for the Galaxy S8+ surfaced online recently. Those who installed it found that it came with a feature that we’ve not seen before on Samsung’s smartphones. It introduced the Dolby Atmos feature and added a toggle in the Settings menu. While people thought that this meant they would get this feature in the public build of Oreo, Samsung has confirmed that the upcoming Oreo update does not bring the Galaxy S8 Dolby Atmos feature.
A UK-based community admin for the Samsung Members app has said that Samsung currently does not have any plans to offer the Dolby Atmos feature on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ with the Android 8.0 firmware update.
This is predictably going to make a lot of Galaxy S8 users sad. Dolby Atmos is a rare find on smartphones as it is. Other devices that have this feature include the likes of the Razer Phone and Nokia 6.
The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ were the most popular Android flagship smartphones last year and it would have made a big difference for millions of users if this feature was added.
Now that Samsung has confirmed that the Oreo update for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ won’t bring this feature, it’s likely that the company is readying this feature for the Galaxy S9. It would make sense for the company to first introduce Dolby Atmos functionality with its next-generation flagship handsets.
