This is why it doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that this could have potentially forced other companies to seek alternatives. In a report from DigiTimes, it claims that various Chinese OEMs are now seeking alternatives to OLED, such as mini LEDs, apparently due to Apple hogging most of the OLED supply.
The report reads in part, “The vendors speculate Apple may extend use of AMOLED panels to its iPhone devices to be launched in 2018, occupying more of Samsung Display’s AMOLED production, the sources said.” In addition to Samsung, we have been hearing reports that LG could also be tapped to supply Apple with OLEDs.
It was expected that LG would be one of Apple’s suppliers for last year’s iPhone X in terms of displays, but the company had previously confirmed that was not the case, although it is possible that LG could be tapped to supply to Apple this year.
