Market analysts are making their predictions about the massive acquisitions that we might see happening in 2018. Just yesterday, a couple of Citi analysts predicted that Apple might buy Netflix. Now we have another analyst predicting that Amazon is going to buy Target this year. If that’s true, it would mean that Amazon’s shakeup on the retail landscape may not be over yet.
Loup Venture co-founder Gene Munster predicts in a report that Amazon is going to acquire Target in 2018. He says that Target is the ideal offline partner for Amazon as it has a shared demographic and a “manageable but comprehensive store count.”
It’s not like Amazon is opposed to the idea of buying retail chains. The company surprised everyone with its $13.7 acquisition of Whole Foods last year. It hasn’t even hinted at a possible acquisition of Target so nothing is set in stone right now. It’s not even known if both companies have even talked about this possibility.
Munster values a potential deal at $41 billion which would be a 15 percent premium over Target’s current value. A deal would likely have to be approved by regulators. Even if the deal goes through, Walmart will continue to have a larger share in the retail market.
Whether or not anything like this happens remains to be seen. It’s just a prediction right now and there’s no confirmation if such a deal will be made.
