Is 2018 the year that Apple will make the full jump to OLED iPhones? We’re sure that some are probably hoping that is true, but apparently that won’t be the case. In a report from the China Times (via AppleInsider), Apple’s 2018 iPhones are expected to feature both OLED and LCD models.
This is similar to last year’s iPhone lineup where the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus featured the use of LCD, which is what Apple has been using all this while, while the iPhone X came with an OLED screen. Apple is expected to eventually make the shift, but if this report is accurate then it probably won’t be in 2018. However we have heard reports that Apple is looking to invest into LG Display to help give them the manufacturing capacity.
According to the report, it echoes an earlier report which suggests that Apple could have several iPhones in the works of different screen sizes. One of which will be a 6.1-inch iPhone, while the other is said to be of the 6.5-inch variety, and it is said that the former will be of the LCD variety, meaning that iPhone customers will have two OLED models to choose from this year.
The report also claims that Japan Display will be the one supplying the LCD panels for the 6.1-inch iPhone, with LG pitching in. Either way take it with a grain of salt for now, but we’ll keep an eye out for more details if there are any to be had.
