Now obviously that rumor did not pan out, and while reports are claiming that facial recognition could be the next big thing, Synaptics doesn’t think so. In fact the company has recently announced its own in-display fingerprint sensor, and according to the company, they are hinting that a “top 5” smartphone manufacturer will be adopting it and that the component is already undergoing mass production.
Synaptics obviously doesn’t mention which company it is, but they did drop some hints by mentioning bezel-free OLED displays, which some have taken to mean Samsung. Whether or not this is true remains to be seen, but we have heard rumors that Samsung could be interested in the tech, and that they have actually been working to try and get it up and running, but haven’t really had much luck.
In fact KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that the tech might only debut with the Galaxy Note 9, although Synaptics’ announcement does hint that it could be sooner (assuming they’re talking about Samsung).
