Typically when it comes to CES, it’s common to see various companies show off the tech that they’ve been working on, especially when it comes to displays where we see companies put out bigger, brighter, and higher-resolution displays. It looks like 2018 is no different as LG has officially announced what they are claiming is the world’s first 88-inch 8K display.
While 4K is probably going to be the standard we can expect moving forwards for the next few years, we wouldn’t be surprised if 8K will become the next standard we can expect. According to LG, their latest display offers a 7680×4320 resolution, making it 16 times higher compared to Full HD, and four times more than UHD.
LG is also boasting that due to the use of OLED, creating an 88-inch 8K display means that they are able to keep the display slim because the OLEDs are self-emissive and do not require backlighting, like LCDs. It also means that less components are needed which helps to keep costs down, while also using less energy.
According to In-Byung Kang, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at LG Display, “The successful development of the world’s first 8K OLED display is a milestone for the 8K era and underscores the exciting potential of OLED. OLED is clearly a next-generation technology leader and for this reason, LG Display is accelerating its research and development into OLED so that we can provide differentiated products to customers and markets.”LG will be showing off the tech at CES 2018, but in terms of pricing and availability it is unknown, although usually these types of tech are more of a proof-of-concept rather than a consumer-ready product.
