Facebook’s primary apps have been downloaded countless times despite the fact that they take up a lot of resources on the device and require a lot of data. Facebook released Messenger Lite in October last year. The lightweight app required less data and resources than its full-fledged counterparts. Facebook initially launched the app in emerging markets where it proved to be really useful. The company later expanded it globally and now Facebook Messenger boasts over 100 million installs.
Facebook Messenger Lite app was launched in emerging markets initially and the company later expanded it to most markets across the globe earlier this year. It eventually released the app in the United States and the United Kingdom as well a few months back.
The app had reached the 50 million installs milestone in August this year. Given that it has since been released in all major markets, it’s not surprising to see that the app’s install base has doubled in nearly four months.
The 100 million app installs confirmation comes from the Google Play Store which now mentions the figure in the app’s listing. Do keep in mind that apps that come pre-loaded on phones count towards this number even if they’re never used.
What the figure does not show is the number of times that the app may have been installed from other sources. It’s possible that those who really wanted to use the app would have sideloaded the APK on their devices when Messenger Lite was not officially available in their region.
