Blizzard’s Diablo 3 was originally released in 2012 and its expansion following in 2014, meaning that the game is about 5 years old and could be due for a refresh. In fact there have been rumors that a Diablo 4 could be in the works, and analysts at Goldman Sachs are predicting that the game will most likely arrive by 2020 alongside Overwatch 2.
According to Goldman Sachs analyst Christopher Merwin, “We are raising our 2019 and 2020 estimates on account of a robust multi-year pipeline of games — Diablo, Overwatch 2, and a Blizzard mobile title — which we don’t think Street estimates are fully taking into account.” We’re not sure what Merwin means by Overwatch 2, and whether or not he means a full blown sequel, or if we’re talking about an expansion.
Given how much Blizzard has built up Overwatch since its release, with animated shorts, comics, and stories, it’s starting to feel like they’re approaching the game similar to World of Warcraft, where new content will be added with patches and an expansion. Also given that it is largely multiplayer, we’re not sure how different a sequel could be since we doubt that Blizzard will be throwing in campaigns (or could they?).
Either way we’ll just have to wait and see how this one turns out, but if you are indeed looking forward to a new Diablo game, which the current version has grown rather long in the tooth, then it seems that you’ll have a bit of waiting to do.
