Battery replacements for out-of-warranty iPhones typically cost $79, but as a token of apology, Apple has announced that they will reduce the price down to $29. “Apple is reducing the price of an out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacement by $50 — from $79 to $29 — for anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced, starting in late January and available worldwide through December 2018.”
The company has also announced that they plan to release an update to iOS that will give users more “visibility” into the health of their iPhone’s battery, so they have a better idea of whether or not it is actually affecting their device’s performance. This had actually been suggested before where it was proposed that Apple could build in notifications in iOS that warn users when their batteries might need replacing.
For the most part Apple is still pretty much standing by their previous claims, in which this was done out of providing a better experience to users and prevent unexpected shutdowns, but they are apologizing for the way the issue was handled. Recently companies such as Motorola and HTC have come forward voluntarily with statements that they do not slow down their phones despite aging batteries.
