Microsoft set an ambitious goal to have Windows 10 up and running on more than one billion devices by the end of 2018. The company decided to give up on that goal and acknowledged that it will take Windows 10 longer to reach that magic number. It’s getting there, albeit slowly. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has revealed that Windows 10 is now running on 600 million devices across the globe.
The 600 million figure includes tablets, PCs, Xbox One consoles, Surface Hub devices, phones, and HoloLens headsets. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed this figure during the company’s annual shareholders meeting earlier today.
The company is still 400 million shy of reaching its goal and the growth has stagnated ever since Microsoft discontinued the free Windows 10 upgrade offer. Moreover, since Microsoft is no longer interested in making Windows-powered smartphones, those devices won’t contribute to the numbers as well.
It’s difficult to say when Windows 10 will reach that one billion devices milestone. The last official figures that Microsoft revealed were back in May this year and that’s when it had hit 500 million devices. It has taken almost six months after that to add an additional 100 million devices.
At this rate, it may take a couple of years before Microsoft can proudly say that Windows 10 powers more than one billion devices across the globe.
