Sony’s PS4 Pro was launched last year and this year we saw the launch of the Nintendo Switch and the Microsoft Xbox One X, which means that these are the latest consoles available in the market right now. However could next-gen consoles be in the horizon? According to Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemot, yes, and that we could see them in two years.
Speaking during an investor’s call (via GameSpot), Guillemot was quoted as saying that he believes that we are at least two years away from seeing next-gen consoles being launched. “As Sony launched PlayStation 4 Pro last year and Microsoft Xbox One X this year, we think we still have a minimum of two years in front of us before something new is coming.”
Guillemot stresses that this is just Ubisoft’s projected arrival of next-gen consoles, meaning that this is just what Ubisoft thinks and isn’t necessarily a guarantee. However Guillemot’s prediction might not be too far off. Earlier this year analyst Michael Pachter had suggested that we could be seeing the PlayStation 5 launched in 2019, making it two years from now.
Prior to that other analysts have suggested a possible 2018 release for the PS5, although given that the PS4 Pro was launched in 2016, two years from then does make it 2018. In any case we suppose only time will tell, so until then take it with a grain of salt.
