Now according to a report out of South Korea (via SamMobile), those rumors are quickly gaining steam because it seems that Samsung has now reportedly ordered the components necessary to create a 3D facial recognition system. The report is claiming that the upcoming system by Samsung is expected to be more accurate, faster, and safer than the one found in the Galaxy S8.
However as you might have heard from the previous report, Samsung is also expected to maintain the iris scanner as well. We’re not sure if this means that the fingerprint sensor will be removed or if it will be kept, but either way it sounds like Samsung wants to try and compete against the iPhone X’s TrueDepth camera and Face ID system.
Whether or not they’ll succeed remains to be seen. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously said that Android handset makers are 2.5 years away from catching up to Apple’s TrueDepth system, but if anyone has the resources to play catchup, it would be Samsung.
