Justice League Box Office Open Leaves A Lot To Be Desired

Justice League was supposed to be a hit for the DC Extended Universe but the movie’s box office open leaves a lot to be desired. Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment’s big-budget Justice League has opened to a disappointing $96 million in North America. It has actually posted the lowest domestic opening of any movie in the DC Extended Universe. If DC was hoping to match Marvel’s latest Thor movie, it seems unlikely now.

Prior to open, Justice League was expected to open to at least $110 million. Even if it hit that figure, it wouldn’t have held a candle to Marvel’s famous Avengers franchise. The first movie, titled The Avengers, opened to a record $204.7 million in 2012. The 2015 sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron opened to an impressive $191.3 million.

“Our path to box-office success is different than what we thought. Given the extremely lucrative Thanksgiving week, we have a chance to hold audiences and ultimately come in at a good level,” said Jeff Goldstein, the president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros.

Marvel’s latest movie, Thor: Ragnarok, opened to $122.7 million in North America a couple of weeks back. Even DCEU’s own titles like Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice performed well with an opening of $166 million domestically just last year.

Justice League does appear to be getting decent traction overseas, though. It ranked in $185.5 million from 65 launch markets. The total for the opening came to $281.5 million, though the film had been expected to fetch more than $325 million.
