Intel and AMD are rivals in the same industry and yet they’ve teamed up to develop a new laptop chip, possibly to take on NVIDIA. The new Intel Core processor combines a high-performance CPU with custom graphics from AMD. They’ve confirmed that the new chip is meant for notebooks that are meant to be thin and portable.
This new chip is going to be part of Intel’s 8th Gen Intel Core lineup and it brings together the company’s Core H series processor with a third-party discrete graphics chip from AMD’s Radeon group. The graphics chip will be custom to Intel and it’s going to be packed inside the single processor package.
This chip will power a new breed of portable notebooks that can deliver discrete performance-tier graphics experiences in AAA games.
The notebooks powered by this chip won’t compete with those powered by AMD’s recently announced Ryzen chips. They’re designed for ultraportable notebooks and while they are capable of running games, this chip will be particularly good for serious gaming.
Intel also points out that this is the first consumer product that has EMIB. It’s described as a small intelligent bridge “that allows heterogeneous silicon to quickly pass information in extremely close proximity.” This enables faster and more powerful performance in the chip without an increase in the size.
We can expect notebooks powered by this Intel and AMD-developed chip to be released in the coming months.
