Developers who want to build augmented or virtual reality apps need 3D objects. It’s difficult for independent and small developers as creating a lot of 3D objects requires a significant amount of time and resources. So while bigger studios and app developers can do this, it becomes difficult for everyone. Google aims to rectify this problem with a new service called Poly.
Google describes its Poly service as a one-stop shop for browsing, discovering, and download 3D objects that can be used in augmented and virtual reality apps.
Poly is an online library of 3D objects that can be used by developers in their apps. Google enables anyone to upload their 3D objects and make them available to others through a Creative Commons license. Any and all developers can use Poly to search for the 3D objects they need and then use them in their apps and games.
There are already thousands of 3D models available on Poly, covering everything from a rocket ship to an ice cream cone. Users will be able to remix many of the models that they find on Poly by importing it into Tilt Brush or Blocks. Poly will then automatically credit and link to the original version when the remix is published.
This is a great service for developers who are building VR and AR applications. The best part is that Poly is available for free.
