It is safe to say that when Bethesda announced that DOOM and Wolfenstein II would be arriving on the Nintendo Switch, many were surprised. We know that the publisher was already supporting the Switch with Skyrim, but to see the company bring more of its big titles onto the platform was certainly a pleasant surprise.
The good news is that if you were looking forward to enjoying DOOM on your Switch, you’ll be pleased to learn that the game is now available for Switch owners. The game will take full advantage of the Switch where gamers can play in portable mode, docked mode, and through the Joy-Con controllers. It will come with all the multiplayer maps and modes that are part of the original, although note that they will have to be downloaded separately.
It has been noted that DOOM for the Switch has been restructured from the ground up, and as noted by The Verge in their review of the game, unfortunately this means that there are some technical compromises due to the Switch’s hardware limitations. The publication notes that the game seems to cap at 720p resolution, and manages 30fps, versus the 60fps that gamers are seeing from the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game.
In fact just yesterday a video compared the graphics between the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch versions of the game, showing that the Switch version’s graphics rank last amongst the four platforms. However as the review notes, this does not necessarily detract from the overall gaming experience because despite the technical limitations, it still plays very well and very much like the original. DOOM for the Switch is now available and will cost gamers $60.
