Xbox One Backward Compatibility For Original Xbox Coming This Year

Microsoft took everyone by surprise when it announced that the Xbox One would have backward compatibility with certain Xbox 360 titles. Since then, Microsoft has added dozens of titles to the backward compatibility list. It took everyone by surprise at E3 2017 when it announced that the console will also get support for some original Xbox games. Microsoft hasn’t said much about this since then but it has reiterated now that the Xbox One backward compatibility for original Xbox games is going to arrive this year.

Microsoft’s announcement that select original Xbox games will be playable on the Xbox One as well took its fans by surprise. The announcement was welcomed by the Xbox faithful. However, Microsoft didn’t really talk about a release date for this functionality back then so it wasn’t clear when the backward compatibility for these features would arrive.

The company’s Xbox boss Phil Spencer has confirmed that the feature is going to arrive before the end of this year. He said that the company is close to flipping the switch on this.

“I know the games that are coming for the original Xbox but I don’t think we’ve announced them all. We have to do this in partnership with partners, but we’re still on track. I feel really good. The games look great,” he added.

When asked if the functionality will arrive in 2017, Spencer confirmed that it would. So while Microsoft isn’t committing to a precise release date as yet, at least we know now that some original Xbox titles will be playable on the Xbox One before the end of this year.
