When Apple announced the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and the iPhone X, one of the new features that would be offered in the phones is native wireless charging. In the past iPhone users would have to purchase third-party wireless charging cases. Apple also announced the AirPower wireless charging mat.
Now it looks like Samsung could be working on something similar. In a patent discovered by Patently Apple (via 9to5Mac), Samsung appears to be working on a wireless charging mat that looks similar to that of the AirPower mat, or at least in concept. The patent shows how it can be used to charge a smartphone and a smartwatch at the same time, which is kind of what the AirPower mat was meant to do.
For those learning about this for the first time, the AirPower mat is essentially a wireless charging mat that is wide enough to support the charging of multiple Apple devices, like the iPhone, Apple Watch, and even the AirPods. The concept of a wireless charging mat isn’t exactly new but as usual, Apple has put their own spin on things.
That being said, Samsung has created their own wireless charging mats before, although they were usually big enough to just charge a single device. Whether or not this patent becomes a reality remains to be seen.
