According to a new report, Destiny 2 physical game sales are down more than 50 percent in the United States compared to the original Destiny game in the first month after launch. NPD’s report is based on sell-through data sourced by three Wall Street analyst reports. Analysts say that the launch month of Destiny 2 brought in a lower amount of physical sales compared to the original title by a significant margin.
“The launch month of Destiny 2 was well short of the original iteration by a material amount,” writes Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson in a note to investors.
It seems that Destiny 2 physical sales haven’t just been disappointing in the United States. A recent report suggested that the title’s first-week physical sales in the United Kingdom registered a 58 percent year over year declined compared to the original Destiny game.
Physical sales obviously don’t show the full picture. They don’t take into account digital sales so it’s possible that Destiny 2’s overall sales might be equal to or even better than its predecessor.
The game’s publisher Activision seems to be happy with Destiny 2’s performance so far. It said last month that Destiny 2 sales have “surpassed the original’s records for engagement and digital sales in launch week.” It hasn’t provided a total sales figure for Destiny 2 as yet, though.
