Some of the biggest tech leaders have voiced their concerns about the potential dangers that artificial intelligence can pose. They’re met with opposing arguments quite frequently, but it’s not like those in the know don’t understand the dangers of AI. Russian president Vladimir Putin certainly does. He predicts that the country which leads the way in artificial intelligence research “will be the ruler of the world.”
Putin made these remarks while speaking to students last week. “Artificial intelligence is the future, not only for Russia, but for all humankind,” he said, adding that “It comes with colossal opportunities, but also threats that are difficult to predict. Whoever becomes the leader in this sphere will become the ruler of the world.”
It’s not surprising that some of the most powerful nations on the planet view the development of artificial intelligence as a national security issue. China recently said that it aims to become the global leader in AI research by 2030. The U.S. is also seen as a leader in this space.
Putin added that Russia is of the view that no one country should be able to “monopolize” artificial intelligence and that if Russia becomes a leader in this space, it will share its know-how with the entire world just as it shares its nuclear technologies today.
