Pi Wireless Charging Will Not Require A Charging Mat

Before Apple’s new iPhones were unveiled and wireless charging was confirmed, many had expected Apple’s iPhones to introduce a new breed of wireless charging which could charge from a distance and not require a charging mat. Unfortunately that did not exactly pan out, but not to worry because it seems that there are other companies working on it.

Dubbed Pi, this is a device put together by a startup (also called Pi) that allows users to charge their electronic devices wirelessly and from a distance. If this sounds familiar, it is because Pi is not the first on the scene with such technology. Previously we have seen efforts from the likes of Energous and their WattUp charger which is said to offer charging from distances as far as 15 feet, but like Energous, Pi’s offering will offer a shorter distance, but users can still cut the cord.

As you can see in the image above, Pi is shaped like a cone and from the cone, it will project a charging beam that can shape and direct magnetic fields around the device, so all you need to do is put your device near Pi and it will charge.

Its creators do plan to sell Pi as a standalone product, but they are also talking to partners about integrating the technology into other products, like maybe speakers like the Google Home or Amazon Echo. No word on pricing just yet, but they are looking to priced it below the $200 mark. Those interested can reserve themselves a unit via the company’s website.
