LG V30’s Main Camera Might Not Have An F/1.6 Aperture

Ahead of the LG V30’s launch, the company began teasing some of the features that would be part of the phone. One of those features is the phone’s camera, which according to LG would sport an f/1.6 lens, making it a smartphone that would have the widest aperture lens on it to date.

This meant that in theory it should be able to achieve slightly better bokeh and also allow more light in, which would make it faster at capturing photos and would come in handy for low-light photography. However it seems that might not necessarily be the case, according to reports in which many have found the lens to be not as wide as LG had advertised.

With photos taken by the LG V30’s main camera, using a variety of software, it was discovered that the aperture is at f/1.69 instead of f/1.6 as advertised. Is this a big deal? Yes it is, because if you know anything about cameras, you know that sometimes there is a reason why some photographers are so adamant about using a f/1.4 lens versus one that is f/1.6, although we guess the layman might not care so much.

That being said, 9to5Google has speculated that this isn’t so much LG cheating its customers, but rather a software issue in which the camera app hasn’t been updated to take advantage of the lens’ wider aperture, but hopefully LG will address this issue soon.
