New Report ‘Confirms’ iPhone 8 Will Not Have Touch ID

Touch ID has become somewhat standard and expected from the iPhone ever since Apple introduced it on the iPhone 5s. However we have heard rumors that the upcoming iPhone 8 could skip Touch ID and introduce a new facial scanning feature as an alternative, which is kind of a risky move.

This is because we have seen how facial recognition systems have been beaten using photographs, and for Apple to not offer up a backup biometric security system is a huge gamble. Whether or not that is true remains to be seen, but a new report from The Wall Street Journal (via BGR) has “confirmed” that the upcoming iPhone 8 will not sport Touch ID.

The report claims that Apple had initially tried to put Touch ID on the iPhone 8 underneath the device’s display, which is what we have been hearing about, but unfortunately they could not get it to work properly in time for the phone’s launch, and decided to do away with the feature entirely. In fact there have been some rumors suggesting that at one point Apple could have toyed with the idea of maybe putting Touch ID on the back of the phone.

Like we said, offering facial scanning (apart from passcode) as the only form of biometric security does seem like a big risk on Apple’s part, especially if it does not function the way they are intending it to, but we guess this is something we’ll have to wait and see come 12th of September which is when the new iPhones will be announced.
