iPhone 8 Official: New Glass Design, Wireless Charging, And More

Apple officially unveiled the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus today. The much-rumored handsets feature a new glass and aluminum design with Retina HD displays. They’re also the first iPhone models to have support for wireless charging. Just like their predecessors, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models feature single and dual cameras respectively.

Apple claims that the iPhone 8 has the “most durable glass ever in a smartphone.” The glass is made using a seven layer color process and is mated to a color-matched aerospace-grade aluminum bezel. The entire package is dust and water resistant.

The new 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch Retina HD displays on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus have True Tone technology to adjust the white balance of the display to match the surrounding light. The enables the displays to provide a more natural viewing experience. Both models feature redesigned stereo speakers that are 25 percent louder than the iPhone 7.

Under the hood is Apple’s new A11 Bionic processor. It has a six core CPU design with two performance cores and four efficiency coures that are 25 percent and 70 percent faster than the A10 Fusion chip. It also features Apple’s own GPU with a three core design that promises up to 30 percent faster graphics performance than the previous generation.

The iPhone 8 has an improved 12 megapixel rear camera with a larger and faster sensor, a new color filter, and deeper pixels. It’s capable of recording video in 4K resolution at up to 60fps and 1080p slo-mo video at 240fps. The iPhone 8 gets improved 12 megapixel dual cameras with an enhanced Portrait Mode.

The cameras have been custom tuned for the ultimate augmented reality experience. Each camera on the iPhone 8 Plus is individually calibrated while the new gyroscopes and accelerometers provide accurate motion tracking. Scene recognition and world tracking is done by the new A11 Bionic processor.

Since the iPhone 8 has a glass back it’s compatible with wireless charging. Apple is supporting the open Qi wireless charging standard which means that the iPhone 8 can be wirelessly charged with any Qi-compatible wireless charger.

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus will be available in silver, space gray, and a new gold finish with 64GB and 256GB capacity models with prices starting at $699.

Customers can place pre-orders for the iPhone 8 starting September 15th and it will ship to customers in a handful of countries including the United States on September 22nd.
