Microsoft today announced that its first Windows 10 S-powered notebook – the Surface Laptop – has now been released in additional markets across the globe. The Surface Laptop was launched in June this year. It was Microsoft’s largest Surface launch in history and now, even more people across the globe can purchase the notebook. Microsoft has now confirmed that it has extended the free Windows 10 S upgrade period.

All Surface Laptops come with Windows 10 S installed out of the box. It’s a lightweight version of Windows that Microsoft announced earlier this year. It’s only capable of installing apps from the Windows Store as side loading apps is not possible. Those who want the ability to side load apps have to upgrade to another iteration of Windows 10.

Microsoft has promised Windows 10 S users free upgrades to Windows 10 Pro. It had previously said that those users will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for free until the end of this year.

That changes today. Microsoft has now announced that Windows 10 S users can upgrade from that iteration of the OS to Windows 10 Pro for free until March 31st, 2018. “We hope this provides increased flexibility for those people searching for the perfect back-to-school or holiday gift,” the company says.
