In an announcement on the FAA’s website, the agency states, “At the request of U.S. national security and law enforcement agencies, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is using its existing authority under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) § 99.7 – “Special Security Instructions” – to address concerns about unauthorized drone operations over 10 Department of the Interior (DOI) sites, including the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore.”
In addition to the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore, other landmarks that have been restricted to drones include the Boston National Historical Park, Independence National Historical Park, Folsom Dam, Glen Canyon Dam, Grand Coulee Dam, Hoover Dam, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, and the Shasta Dam.
This is expected to come into effect on the 5th of October and the FAA has since launched an interactive map where drone owners can check out which areas that they can or cannot fly to.
