Atari confirmed several months ago that it’s working on a new console called the Ataribox. There are still quite a few details that the company needs to confirm officially. Some Ataribox price and release details have been revealed online today in a new report. It gives us an idea of what the console might cost and when we can expect it to arrive.
Venturebeat reports that the Ataribox console is going to be powered by an AMD processor. Ataribox creator and general manager Feargal Mac confirmed that the company is going to launch a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo this fall and that the console itself will be launched in the spring of next year.
The console is going to be launched with a significant backlog of Atari’s classic titles. The company’s aim with this product is to take its fans down memory lane. However, the console will be capable of running more recent titles like Minecraft as well.
Ataribox will have a custom AMD processor with Radeon graphics. It will be powered by Linux with a user interface customized for TVs. The machine will be capable of running PC games, streaming, running apps, browsing the internet, playing music, and more. Bear in mind, though, that it will only be able to run games that a mid-range PC can support. None of your AAA titles will be supported.
Atari is going to consider the feedback from its fans on things like colors, content, special editions, design options, and early access. The design will pay homage to classic Atari consoles like the Atari 2600.
The Ataribox will be released next year and it’s expected to cost around $250 to $300.
