Microsoft released a new Fast ring Windows 10 build for members of its Insiders program today. They’re the people that get to test upcoming Windows 10 updates before they’re rolled out to the general public. The company has also confirmed today that members of the Insider program can now test Windows 10 S builds before they’re released. Head of the Windows Insider program Dona Sarkar confirmed that Insiders are now able to install Windows 10 S and opt-in for testing new beta builds as they’re released.
Windows 10 S is a new version of Microsoft’s operating system that promises a robust Windows experience with low-end hardware. It’s only capable of running apps downloaded from the Windows Store.
The OS is quite capable of running full desktop apps but they need to be specially packaged and listed on the store. Windows 10 S also provides users with full support for Microsoft Office.
There’s also support for peripherals and devices that are normally supported on a proper Windows 10 machine. The very first Windows 10 S-powered machines were launched in the summer with prices starting at $189.
“Windows Insiders can try Windows 10 S on their PCs and join the Windows Insider Program via Settings > Update & security > Windows Insider Program to receive Insider Preview builds for Windows 10 S just as they would on other editions of Windows 10,” writes Sarkar in the latest build notes.
Insiders have to keep in mind that the Windows 10 S setup tool installs a new edition of Windows and it’s only going to work on PCs that are currently running Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise Edition.
