While the loss of Disney’s licensing deal is a big one, it seems that Netflix is hoping that maybe they will still be able to salvage something. In a report from Reuters, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said that the company is still in active discussions with Disney about the possibility of continuing to have the rights to stream Marvel and Lucasfilm shows on Netflix even after 2019.
This is an interesting proposal because in an earlier report, Disney seemed a bit unsure about what they will do with their Marvel and Star Wars shows, and whether or not those universes will be bundled together with their streaming service (which makes sense), or if they could stand on their own as separate streaming services.
Allowing Netflix to continue to stream Marvel and Lucasfilm content could be one way for Disney to deal with the issue. However nothing has been confirmed yet so Netflix subscribers should probably not get their hopes up just yet.
