Multiple reports have suggested that Google will soon bring its AI-powered Assistant to Chromebooks. The company has also started the process of sunsetting its “Ok, Google” feature in favor or Assistant. Reports have also suggested that new Chromebooks will have a dedicated Assistant key. The newly leaked Chromebook keyboard layout confirms this possibility.
The leaked Chromebook keyboard layout has been obtained from a bug report which contained this screenshot. The image shows the keyboard overlay with a dedicated Assistant key positioned between the ctrl and alt keys on the left of the space bar.
The leaked image also backs up an earlier report which suggested that the forward key would be removed from the keyboard which will also see the addition of a play/pause key and a new key right of the vol.up key which is labeled as “system menu.”
As the name suggests, the Assistant key will be used for bringing up Google Assistant at the touch of a button. The system menu key may be used to enable the system tray of the Chromebook and perhaps even bring up menus when inside of apps that have support for the new key.
It’s unclear right now when new Chromebooks with the updated keyboard layout are going to hit the market.
