Instagram enabled its users to stream live video using their mobile devices a long time back but it will soon make this experience more social. The Facebook-owned service today confirmed that it’s testing a new way to stream live video. Instagram is going to allow users to add guests to their live videos so that they can stream together with friends who may not be in the same location as they are.
Instagram is testing this feature out at this point in time so it’s unclear when the service will say that it has gone live properly for all of its users.
Adding a guest to a live video stream is easy enough. Users just have to tap the new icon on the bottom right when they’re broadcasting and add anyone that’s currently watching their stream.
Once the contact joins, the screen splits into two and the guest pops up right below the user’s screen. Viewers will continue to be able to like and comment as they follow along with the broadcast.
Users will be able to remove their guest and add someone else at any point during the broadcast or they can decide to exit the broadcast on their own.
Instagram says that this feature is being tested with a “small percentage” of its users and that this feature will be rolled out globally over the next few months.
