You may want to pay attention if you recently purchased a glitter-filled iPhone case. MixBin Electronics, a third-party accessories manufacturer, has issued a recall for iPhone cases that it produced for several top brands, including Victoria’s Secret. The recall has been issued after reports of the glitter and liquid-filled cases causing chemical burns and skin irritation.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has posted a notice confirming the recall which covers iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 7 cases produced by MixBin.
Over 260,000 cases produced by MixBin have now been recalled. They were made for brands like Victoria’s Secret, Nordstrom Rack, and Amazon.
The cases vary in color and style as they have been produced for different brands, but all of the recall cases feature a liquid and glitter-filled section on the back that’s overlaid with branding and artwork.
If this compartment is damaged and the liquid pours out, it can cause skin redness, itching, blisters, and even chemical burns. The recall notice doesn’t mention what chemicals the liquid contains but the issue has been widespread enough to warrant a total recall.
The CPSC has received 24 reports of skin irritation or chemical burns so far that have been caused by the liquid from these cases. Out of the 24 reported cases, 19 have been in the United States. One customer even said that they suffered permanent scarring from a chemical burn.
