To say that Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” is a hit would be a massive understatement. It has become a phenomenon in its own right. The track has become very popular across the globe and since YouTube is the preferred destination for music videos, the music video for this track has now become the most viewed video on YouTube. It has stolen that crown in just seven months after it first appeared online.
Psy’s “Gangnam Style” was the most viewed video on YouTube for the longest time. It has held on to this title since 2012. Just last month, Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” from the Furious 7 movie finally managed to steal the crown from the South Korean pop star.
Khalifa’s video was barely able to hold on to the crown for a month. The video for this popular track was released back in 2015. It took the video two years to reach this milestone. Despacito did it in seven months.
The video for Despacito appeared in January this year. It has received 2,997,026,945 views so far and counting. Given the immense popularity of this song, it’s likely going to set the bar much higher now for the next contender.
Until one comes along, Despacito will remain the most viewed video on YouTube.
